Also from Mississippi, but we live in upper east TN now.  We don't have them here.  We didn't have them in far southern central VA when we lived there, either.  Also, I would think the mountaintops were safer from fire ants than the lowlands.  Just thinking out loud......  a'bear

I would plan on them being everywhere S of Central VA.
