There was some back & forth about this condition on the CDT-L a little
while ago. I was talking to a friend & one-time CDT hiker over the
weekend. He's had this for some degree for 15 years... for him, it comes
and goes... He said that he tapes two of his toes together - the ones
next to the big toe, which spreads the other toes a bit & removes the
pressure on the nerve. That helps, but isn't perfect. He's also tried
all the other normal stuff (wide shoes, acupuncture, denial, etc...).
Lately, it's gotten worse - such that he's contemplating surgery to
remove the offending nerve.
