Jonathan has a good point.  
 
When I was hiking, I would sometimes check my e-mail on my BB.  It was  
easy to read the CDT-L threads, and get good information, as opposed to 
checking  forums that required the internet and much more battery usage.
 
And yes....I know the pros and cons to "gadgets" on the hikes...:-).
