PS.  The "special" shoes usually have vibram soles and are essentially leather hiking boots (in touring)

Downhill (area) skiing  and  backcountry skiing are two different balls of wax (literally, as I am a wax skier. ;) )

Brett seems to be mixing up backcountry and area (Alpine) and is trying to apply downhill skiing to backcountry.

As an FYI, I did not fall with the 50 lbs of pork roast and wine. :)
