[Cdt-l] iodine water treatment

I second the cautionary note on using elemental iodine water treatment.
Thyroid and permanent kidney damage are possible if you use 100% iodine
treated water for months at a stretch. A few weeks at a time, probably not
a problem. Chlorine or water filters are better choices health-wise.

Matthew & Patrick,

Again, I'll preface this by saying EVERYONE has an opinion about water
treatment. ?There is no correct answer. ?The important part is that you're
doing something to protect yourself.

1) One bottle of polar pure lasts 2000 liters - more than enough for a
thru-hike. ?No need to "stock up." ?This also makes it one of the cheapest
options around.
2) One advantage of iodine (over filters and chlorine) is that it kills
virus, bacteria, and protozoa. ?Neither filters, or chlorine kills all
three.
3) Polar Pure comes in an obnoxiously heavy glass bottle. ?And you must let
the water inside it sit for one hour to saturate. ?So it basically weighs
around 6oz all the time. ?(More than Aqua Mira). ?But at least it's very
small.
4) Iodine definitely has a taste to it. ?Polar Pure is better than iodine
pills, but you can certainly taste it. ?Personally, I get used to it after
about two days.
5) I always boil my water for cooking, so that I don't have to use Polar
Pure for *all* my liquids. ?I don't want my food to taste like iodine too!
6) You can order Polar Pure over the Internet. ?If they won't ship to CA,
then have it shipped general delivery to NM.?
7) Pick whatever water treatment system works for you, but do pick
something!

Thanks for the info Dylan. I keep having this back and forth argument with
myself regarding my filter. The MSR Pro is nearly a pound when it's packed
away wet after use. Lot's of folks just used Aqua Mira on the PCT last year.
I like the idea of Polar Pure being lighter, more concentrated and not
chlorine based. Unfortunately they won't sell Polar Pure to us in the
"Peoples Republic Of California" (PUN Intended).
I had to fight the urge to buy the entire stock of Polar Pure from a store
in Washington last year!
Anyhow, I am guessing you used a bandana as a prefilter and treated with
Polar Pure and added Crystal Light etc.
I sure like the simplicity and much lighter weight of that strategy.. Psst..
Anyone know where to get the "contraband" Polar Pure in CA?
-Iceaxe
PS. Oh Yea.. They don't let us buy sil-nylon tents in CA either. I feel so
safe and protected here in Cali! ;)

Polar Pure is available on the internet, Ice Axe -- But make sure you try
some before you settle on it as your chemical treatment. If you think
chlorine tests bad, wait until you try iodine-based water treatments. I
tried to use polar pure on the PCT in 2008 and the first time I had to use
it I immediately regretted buying it. However, not everyone (but many)
shares my intense distaste for iodine.

In a polar pur bottle there are 5 - 6 capfulls, enough for about 3 qts.

For long water hauls, I have a 3 qt reservoir with 2 - 1 qt bottles. When I
get to a water source, I fill up the reservoir with the qt bottles, then put
dirty water and iodine in the qt bottles. And if I get to a water source and
bottles and reservoir are empty, fill them all up and put the iodine in the
reservoir, then refill the bottle and head out. After an hour, stop and
treat the qt bottles. Then refill the iodine bottle again. Keeping the
iodine bottle stocked is key. That is for the longest haul and can be
modified for distance between water sources.

Another thing to point out with Polar Pur is that it needs to be at a
certain temperature to be effective. I think it's 68F. So with cold streams,
a dark bottle may need to be left in the sun a bit. But on the flip side,
most bacteria doesn't live in cold streams.

I was just telling Bob; Try and explain to any Californian that there are no
longer Grizzly Bears in the state. They won't believe you. Then there is the
whole issue of the color of a Black Bears fur..
One Contractor I know argued with me endlessly. He said he saw a Brown Bear
in Mammoth.. He insisted it was a Grizzly. I tried to tell him they come in
Black, Brown, Cinnamin, and Blonde but the are all American Black Bears...
To no avail.
An equal number of folks, roomates included, think bloodthirsty
mountainlions are waiting in the redwoods to pounce and devour us.
Personally I fear mosquitos more.

I have been using Aqua Mira for years and have never been able to taste it
in my water. However, I was hiking with my brother a few years back who
after using some of my Aqua Mira could taste it in his water. I tried a sip
and sure enough there was a chlorine taste. I finally figured out that since
he was using a wide-mouth Nalgene bottle, we were actually smelling the gas
effervescing from the water. To prove my guess, I kept the top off the
bottle for a minute, and sure enough the chlorine taste went away. Since I
never use a wide-mouth bottle myself, my nose is never exposed to the
effervescing gas, and that is evidently why I don't taste it.

Now I'm waiting for Brooks to say that she wasn't using a wide-mouth bottle,
making my whole theory sound foolish!

Ron

I love Polar Pur. On the AT someone convinced me to try AquaMira and I
almost puked. It was the worst week until I got back to my bounce box. Now I
only take Polar Pur wherever I go, unless the source is really mucky and
I'll take a pump in case.

One consideration with Polar Pur and other iodine treatments should be
over-exposure to Iodine. Long term consumption of iodine can lead to serious
Thyroid problems. As an outdoor guide, I'm counseled to not use iodine
treatment because I'd consume too much of it. Many of us long distance
hikers treat a significant portion of our water throughout our lives, not
just on a single hike. YMMV

I have suspected AquaMira of making me sick on long trips. I use the stuff,
but after a week or so sometimes I just wonder about the stuff. Never have
that effect with a filter. I have used PolarPure but never liked the taste,
but it did the job.
