I hear ya'!
Gimme a plain old paper map and compass. GPS or not, I'll carry them anyway.
Here's the deal. Data is required to build maps. A google trail map with
the MyTopo overlay and way points is a FANTASTIC planning tool and day
dreaming escape.
Further, nothing keeps a journal reader involved in your journey like an
interactive map with your location frequently updated.
The postholer.com server logs scream this fact. I can tell you first
hand that hikers planning their trip and journal readers LOVE IT!
So if you see a hiker on the trail with a GPS, not only is that hiker
staying found in a way that suits them, they are potentially taking
hundreds of cubicle dwellers along on their hike.
You can't imagine what this does for promoting and acquiring supporters
for your favorite trail.
GPS is a good thing!

Been trying to tell people that for 10 years. It's easier, cheaper,
faster - but some people need their toys. :-)
