The Whitewater-Baldy Fire is to the Gila what the great Yellowstone Fire of the late 80's was to the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. I believe this is game over for recreation in much of the western Gila country for many years to come, and that includes the West and Middle forks of the Gila, which will flood catastrophically in coming seasons. Heck, it could be game over for Gila Hot Springs if access roads to the Cliff Dwellings are washed away. I would be very concerned about Doc Campbell's store weathering the unfolding tragedy. Meanwhile, there's the official route of the CDT in the Black Range. I would choose that route, now, for safety's sake, and in the future, quite possibly of necessity.
