The local Klamath USFS crews have made their annual April snow surveys this
week, the last of this season. In the Alps and Marbles PCT sections it looks
like we have an average of 50% of normal, which equals a base of 3ft in some
places and 4ft, or a little more in other places. It will vary some
depending on where you are on the trail. The bottom line is this, there is
less snow here in quite a many years and many south slopes are becoming snow
free quickly. I feel that from Lassen to Ashland will be hikeable by June
1, with minor exceptions in north pockets. If you have the skill, it will be
opening very early this year for adventuring along the northern California
PCT. However, choose your adventures wisely...balanced with your experience
and skills.
