Ceanothus (see-ah-no-thus) or California lilac: Shrubs or small trees,
often with divaricate, sometimes spiny, twigs...[flowers] small but showy,

Easy to remember: dessert has two s's because you want more desserts anyway.
But then some of us like the dry desert, so, oh, nevermind...
But, desserts on the trail are always nice...

Another good way to remember two vs one "s"...desserts make you bigger i.e.,
the word with two s's is dessert. Dang we're a clever bunch :)
