I still have my Jansport internal frame pack I bought in 1979. I think
it was one of Jansport's first large internals - just basically a big
sack. Black heavy bombproof cordura and the back pad is corduroy of
all things - it actually is not as hot as it sounds and very comfy.
The thing is indestructible; been in the Alps, Andes, Rockies,
Olympics and most of So Cal, and in and out of way too many submarine
hatches (which are hell on equipment for some reason). Even considered
(briefly) taking it on the PCT this year but decided on a slightly
lighter pack instead (Dana Design Terraplane).
If they still made the Gaz globetrotter cartridges I would take that
stove too instead I have a Primus and it fits inside the two
Globetrotter pots with a cartridge perfectly - nice self-contained
unit.
Gone are the days when you could expect to get a good 20 to 30 years
out of your equipment <sigh>. I finally had to give up my 1981
Patagonia fleece pullover last year, ex-gf put in the dryer on
super-melt and it wouldn't fit a six year old anymore, I think she did
it on purpose because it was older than she was.
