I don't like weird tastes either.

I've never had a problem with my water tasting much like a plataypus.
I have had a problem when I use my plataypus for flavored/electrolyte water.
Gatorade especially, seems to ruin a platypus tastewise.

When I pack things up after a hike I clean my water containers out with a 
weak mixture of water, bleach and Dawn.  I always have this on my Kitchen 
sink in a spray bottle for other cleaning and sanitizing purposes.
The longer the bleach works, the more neutral tastes become.

Because I use bleach as my water sanitizer on the trail, I'm sure it adds to 
keeping things clean.

Another thing I do is to use a 16 oz water bottle for my main container.  I 
can pull it from the side of my pack leaving my pack on so I am more 
encouraged to stay hydrated.  I also don't taste plastic.  It seems this is 
enough water to get me from one water source to another in very many cases 
on the PCT.  (I do carry a backup supply in Platypi also)
