While I cringe to admit that I spend $18.00 on a pair of socks (although 
more like $16.00 after my dividend), I wear Smartwool Merino Hikers through 
all four seasons with very good results.  Been doing this for two years now, 
and after much experimentation, I can finally say that I have found a 
permanent sock solution.
