I think it's the "6 miles off trail" part.  Timberline Lodge is literally right on the trail (well, ok, like maybe 200 yards off the trail), and while it doesn't have any good stores it does offer package pickup, really good restaurants, and you can keep on trucking without hassling with a hitch or a nasty roadwalk.  There's no particular reason to go to Government Camp unless you're philosophically opposed to resupply boxes.
