Giardia is a specific organism that can be tested for, though it often isn't.  It can be acquired either from water sources or more commonly from other people, as folks have noted already.  Water is probably the *least* common vector for Giardia.

Also, there seems to be a tendency to label any kind of intestinal distress while hiking "giardia", though of course there are many other causes of that problem, like food poisoning from stuff that's been banging around in the bottom of the food bag for far too long.

No idea whether Catra was properly tested or not, but it's too bad there's so much confusion around this topic due to the overuse of the term "giardia".  If we had better information about the *cause* of problems people run into out there, we could make better choices to avoid those problems.
