Not to disagree that VVR has the advantage of
purchasing food, but MTR actually does have a few
items like fuel for sale.  The other advantages of MTR
are that the natural hot spring is nice (IF the river
isn't too high to cross) and the hiker boxes, both
your postal box and the free-to-share boxes, are taken
care of extremely well.  So i would personally choose
MTR IF it's open and the snowmelt isn't raging. 
Especially if you're one of the later hikers in the
thru season or just doing the JMT.

p.s. One more reminder, for shipping food to VVR, use
a bucket.  Mice chew through their boxes.
