I am new to this site as well.

I hiked the AT a year after I retired in 2006 and my wife (retired as well) stayed home. She was not all to pleased when I said I wanted to hike the AT, however, once on the trail she became the best (bar none) resupply support person in the world. She also came out for a mid-hike visit, which she had been adamant about not doing. I think keeping your spouse engaged in the hike planning and logistics plus communication from town goes a long way towards keeping them feeling part of the adventure. We did go for two dayhikes on the AT before I left and that helped as well.

I am thru-hiking the PCT this year. We have gone through the same process from disbelief to involvement as last time and I think things will work out fine.

Now I'm not to sure about the CDT in 2010...

                Hi everyone,

First post intro - I’m obviously a hiker, and love to bp! My typical trips are a week or two, longest was three, and I try to do a couple of trips each year. I’m planning on hiking the JMT, and the more I read about that, the more interest I have in reading journals of PCT thru-hikers, and that’s what got me here!

The idea of a long hike intrigues me, but that would be new for me
 so here’s my question:

For those married hikers that leave their non-hiking spouses behind for a long thru-hike, how has that worked for you?
Have you found any particular difficulties or issues come up?

I am happily married, no kids, but have never left home / wife for several months at a time
just wondering if any of you found that difficult for you and/or your spouse, and if so, in what ways?

  thanks!
