I third this one....as I too, enjoy learning the history of where I'm living. As a recent transplant to the PNW; the lore, myths, and local history is quite fascinating.

I wonder if you read the same book I have here; "Indian Legends of the Pacific Northwest" by Ella Clark? It's a collection of more than one hundred tribal tales, 'culled from the oral tradition of the Indians of Washington and Oregon; of the mountains, lakes, and rivers; of the creation of the world and the heavens above.' Chris bought this book when he first arrived via sailboat to WA.

For myself; I love learning the history of the names of places...rivers, peaks, etc; whether it be from Native Amercian tribal history or local early settlers; makes my adventures hiking and exploring even more meaningful; I can look at the very same view of a mountain stream or peak and put myself in the past 100 or more years ago...imagining what life was like back then..........

I second this! As a PNW-er, I enjoy learning about the area I live in.

I took a book out of the library in the last couple years, I don't remember the name, but the premise was, the different native american myths associated with PNW hikes and peaks. It was really interesting and I wish I could remember the title, but it's probably very easy to search, as that's how I found it on-line at the library.

So I would love more information on the names, etc , of the PNW!

I would like to put a vote in for continued updates on this thread. I found it interesting. If not here, you could send them off line to me. I can print them off and put them out for the hikers to read.
