No need for three thick guidebooks when one thin volume will do. Hike the
PCT the way Clinton Clarke envisioned it. You will need a good sense of
direction and a compass. Directions are often something like "from town,
head generally SW 11 miles to the lake." No GPS coordinates in this
edition, but it includes some rough maps to help you find your way.
Sometimes available at online used book stores and auctions.

This is the 1945 guidebook, the first complete guidebook to the trail.
Before that there were just a few small bulletins with landmarks, lists of
plants and animals, etc.
