We do it with smoke (very lightweight smoke, albeit) and mirrors (what you
see is not what you get).
Gossamer Gear's (formerly GVP's) G4 is basically a ruck with a waistbelt.
The belt helps, but the key is using the sleeping pad as some structure in
the bag. You start off with a lightweight setup, then transmit at least
some of the weight to the hips using the pad and the belt, and what's left
is very light on the shoulders. Even my full suspension, exterior frame,
JanSport (whatever happened to Jan, anyway?) puts some weight on my
shoulders.
Or maybe I just have big shoulders.
