Well not everyone makes it the entire way and lots of
these places are in towns that have lots of choices,
church hostel, low-fee hostel, hotel, motel, campground,
and so on.

And not everyone stops at every location. Unlike
the PCT there are overnight accommodations of one sort
or another available almost every other day on the AT--
and I'm not talking about trail shelters.

Some AT towns have two or three cheap $15 or $20/night
accommodations. Those aren't free but they aren't
hotel rooms either. In any case, I think hikers who
are staying at 'free' locations, especially if they
are staying in someone's home, should be donating
$15 to $20/night anyway.
