Moondog,

I'm flying Southwest too and have to make two off trail trips to nephews
weddings. Originally I considered shipping my pack via UPS to the trail
angels who are picking me up at San Diego, but I finally decided to get
a duffel to check it through. Rather than worry about stashing my After
all, I was paying to ship a bag so why not let the airline take it. I
did decide to get a duffel to go around the bag----the Osprey
Airporter. It's relatively cheap at REI and light enough and compact
enough (it stuffs into an attached pocket) that I can ship it up the
trail in my bounce bucket. It did have some negative reviews, but if it
protects the pack from damage, I guess I can duct tape it together as
needed.

By the way, you can't check spare Lithium batteries, matches, fuel of
any kind, or any kind of stove not in it's original packaging. I sent
those on ahead via UPS in a small box.

Kind of concerned about that 10 x 16 x 24" limit on the carryon as I am
planning to carry on my bounce bucket, a Home Depot 5 gallon paint
bucket. It's 12" diameter x 15"--- which I guess they could argue is 12
x 12 x 15 and therefore too big in the first dimension. If they give me
a hard time, I'll try your "break down and cry" routine. Plus I
suppose I could argue that on a cubic inch basis it is smaller than
their max.
