Taildragger,
While I haven't used them for any extended backpack trips yet (though I will this summer on the JMT) the New Balance 908 trail runners seem to be working out ok for me, and I am heavy. They feel so much better than the Montrail boots used previously. They are about 13 oz each. Feels like you are walking on air.

Alright, so up until recently I've been wearing Salomon shoes (pro 3d
I believe) and since I recently noticed some bad wearing on the
insides near the ankle, I decided that I should replace them before my
hike.

My question is, what would be a comparable shoe that fits the same as
Salomon, I'm thinking about changing shoes since those wore through so
fast, and the soles seemed a little thin for my pack weight (low 40's
with 10L of water and 7 days food (figured in for worst case that I'd
most likely face)). I was also thinking that black shoes and socal
might not mix very well.

Any thoughts?
