No, spring before you leave is when you should know. Either you have experience hiking in snow or you don't.

A person with experience hiking/navigating in snow will probably have little concern about leaving early.

Someone who has never navigated in a snow choked forest and has never walked any distance on snow, will probably feel the need to wait for it to melt out a bit.

April 1st snow conditions in the southern Sierra is a good indication of what your desired start date will be, depending on your abilities.
