My advice is to buy your backpack LAST.

Gather all your gear, grab 5 days of food and get to your local outfitter. Load it up and try out the various packs and sizes.

Then, you'll have an accurate idea what works for *you*.

Having said that, most thru-hikers seem to have about 3500 CI packs.
