I read their journal. It's a great read. If I'm not confusing them  
with another similar journal, they entered the Sierra in April. They  
bought the snowshoes in Ridgecrest.

People used to enter the Sierra a lot earlier than they do now. My  
1975 National Geographic book has pictures of the Sierra with snow as  
far as the eye can see. When I was a kid we used to go backpacking in  
May in the Sierra, although at lower altitudes.

All our current talk about the best day to enter the Sierra is mostly  
to accommodate our lightweight, limited gear means of travel, which  
facilitates a fast thru-hike that doesn't take 6 months.
