Switchback the trail pirate always entered the sierras well armed,  because he 
liked to sack innocent thru hikers, but also because he was afraid of bears.  

One day while waiting for an ambush, a bear snuck up on him from behind and 
mauled him before he could even get a shot off.  

As Switchback laid bleeding and dying, he remembered that old John Muir told him 
once that if he ever needed help in the woods, and couldn't move, he should fire 
three shots in the air, and someone would come to his rescue.
So Switchback did just that, firing three shots into the air.  He waited 15 
minutes, and then fired three more shots into the air.  No one came.  He 
continued firing shots into the air every 15 minutes until he was near death.  

Summoning his last ounce of strength before he passed out, he fired off his last 
three arrows.
