What's the current status of stores/restaurants/whatever in Old Station? Is
there anything open within reasonable walking distance of the trail?

At the risk of violating copyright laws, this is what Burning Daylight says
in his blog:

".....and I were at the front of the store [by the post office] which had
close at 1700 although it was a Friday night. I mentioned to the owner that
he had potential customers and he replied that we were "just taking up
space." It was 1715.

".... drove us to the Old Station Fill-Up about 2 miles down the road.
There, the new owners greeted us enthusiastically. They love PCT hikers,
have a hiker box, take photos of the hikers and have a register. The store
is a large convenience store and a decent resupply can be had. Outside
there are picnic tables and a large flat area that would work out for
(stealth) camping. They lock the store restrooms at night but there is a
porta-let available. They are happy to fill water bottles. The store is
about 500 yards from the trail near the intersection of highways 44 and 89.
This is a much better place to stop than the other store. The owner had the
same dismal attitude when I came through in 2009.

Then the next entry:

"We left camp and decidedhto personally check to see how far the Fill-It is
from the trail. It is less than 500 yards. Kathy and Jay greeted us so
enthusiastically we just had to have coffee and donuts as well as another
Haagen Das bar. The owner was there and he is definitely hiker friendly.
Free camping is available on the adjacent BLM land."
