Good afternoon, Steven,

Being foot-sore, particularly at the ball of the foot behind the toes, is a
very common lack-of-training phenomenon. On training hikes early in the
season I try to go as far as I can with stinging feet, short of actually
getting blisters, and every day the feet get tougher.

If I have to stretch the miles during the training period, or in the first
few weeks of a long hike, I install standard, flat Spenco insoles

They add a bit of cushioning, and the fabric reduces friction which
contributes to foot-bottom blisters. I buy the largest size available then
snip them to fit my full-length arch inserts. Later, when my feet have
become tough and have probably swollen a bit, I remove them and send them
home.

The more common open-cell foam brands don’t do it for me, nor do the
standard marshmallow-type shoe insoles.
