Good afternoon,

I agree with Day-Late’s comments provided one also has paper copies of the
maps, a compass, and the skill to use both if/when the phone thing goes
belly-up.

I don’t carry a smart phone – or even a dumb one, for that matter – nor a
SPOT.  I do carry a small GPS receiver, not because it's really necessary,
but because the technology is so interesting.

With just a map phone and a SPOT it’s too easy to think, “No problem.  If I
get lost, confused, or scared I’ll just punch the panic button then start
scanning the horizon for the helicopter that’s coming to pick me up.”
