Quality vs Lightweight.

This is an REI perception, not a thru-hiker perception

At REI, if it breaks, for whatever reason, they replace it. That means
that stuff that will break when it is abused isn't sold there.

Since most weekenders are not gram-weenies, this works for REI, but
means that they won't sell the lightweight gear that thrus want.

Lightweight and flimsy, doesn't automatically mean "low quality" Look
at a pack from one of the UL manufacturers vs the typical ballistic
nylon pack at REI. The UL packs are flimsy by comparison, and won't
take the same abuse, but they are NOT low quality.

That being said, I think that few UL hikers will use a Jetboil, most
will keep using alcohol stoves, or going stoveless, no matter how much
MendoRider rants.

Oh, and Ed, feel free to forward my email to the USFS with a complaint about me.
