Oops. I should have been clearer. We have NO INTENTION of having campfires.
Ever. But my understanding is that alcohol stoves are not permitted when
burn bans are in effect, and we plan to carry only an alcohol stove.... Please forgive my lack of clarity and completeness. I completely agree that
fires are not needed or desired.

Glad that you'll be refraining from camp fires on your thru.  A very forward thinking choice IMHO.

As others replied, (really applies to all stove users, of all types) please be extra careful with the stoves.  Like so many tools, used properly, they're safe and effective for their intended use, but misused they're a huge danger (think explosives, chain saws, motor vehicles for other examples of very useful, yet potentially very dangerous tools).

Besides checking with the Ranger Districts, another thing you might consider is to also pay close attention to your California Fire Permit.  I don't recall the details of the form (I hiked in '06) but I have to imagine there are "do's" and "don'ts" all spelled out.

Enjoy the hike - it'll be one of the best summers of your life.
