[pct-l] personal locator beacons

Hello Chris,

I have the first generation SPOT.  I have used it successfully during my four-season ride of the PCT from Mexico to Canada. I sent an "OK" message out every night when I reached camps. It always worked for me. I last used it last year as I finished up the last part of the PCT that I had trailered my horse around because of snow when I was there in mid-June. That part is from Horseshoe Meadows top Tuolumne Meadows. It is very important that you have some clear sky above when you send messages. I could tell by the lights when a message was sent. There were times when I had to walk several hundred feet to find a good place from which to send the message. My wife kept those messages in a special dedicated folder. It gave her much-appreciated piece of mind to get them. I have never used the new generation SPOT, but can't imagine that it would not work just as well; it is smaller and lighter than mine, and has some useful features - like the user being able
to send out short text messages. The new DeLorme is larger and heavier, and can also receive messages.

I am looking at PLB's right now due to pressure from my family and loved ones.  I am looking at the spot, and also the acrresqlink.  the spot is cheaper but requires a yearly plan, while the resqlink is more expensive, it doesn't require paying for a subscription.  Does anybody have experience or knowledge about the two comparing their satellite coverage?  I have heard the spot device is "spotty" when sending the OK msg...and the acr doesn't have that option.  I'm not interested in options, just peace of mind for others...so how do i find out if one or the other has better coverage/transmission.  The acr seems to be a cheaper buy even if more expensive since i plan on causing my loved ones more trepidation in the future...sometimes you can't convince people you will be ok...and it would be nice to have a backup backup plan in case i end up not ok
