It depends on where you're going after summiting Mt. Whitney.

If you are going east to Whitney Portal and/or Lone Pine, leave your pack at
the junction of the JMT and Mt. Whitney trails. You'll see several packs
piled there.

If you are returning west to the PCT, leave your gear in your shelter at
Guitar Lake (or wherever you camped in that area). Retrieve your gear and
hike back to the PCT. This is what I did and no one bothered anything. 

Of the two, Guitar Lake should be safer - no day hikers making a one day
up-and-back assault - and you don't have to carry your gear up and down
those big west-side switchbacks to reach the junction. Day hikers get to go
up and down the 99 switchbacks on the east side.
