Halfmile has updated his "Halfmile's PCT" iPhone app webpage - it now includes 
instructions on how to lock the SIM so that the GPS can be used by itself without the
cell radio being on, thus helping to greatly conserve battery power.  Please note that 
in doing so, you must be outdoors to get a location fix - same as with any standalone
GPS unit (since there will be no 'assist' from the cell radio).

The "Halfmile's PCT" iPhone app has been much improved, mostly because of the new 
"trail diagram" mode (IMHO!).
