Six years ago I was in the Hiker Hostel in Dahlanega, GA, all set to begin my Thru-hike and anticipating some fine nights on the AT. Well, Sassafras Mountain did me in, and as I recouped at the creek, laying in my Hammock and watching the US Army Rangers as they did their night time maneuvers, I contemplated whether or not to continue. I had to walk out from there and I did make it to the Gooch Gap shelter (with difficulty). Disappointment on the trail did not abate when I got back to NYC and consulted with an Orthopedist who, after examining me, declared that my knees and hips and other joints were afflicted with Arthritis. Bummer. So now I hike on flat ground and very slowly on hilly terrain. Memories of being at Springer and onward to Gooch Gap are good ones but that may be from a fuzzy brain.

:-(

The ~sigh~ that one heaves when the anniversary of last year's AT start date rolls around.... last year on this date I was drumming my fingers waiting for the next day, my pack ready to go and leering at me from the couch; my hiking partner (whom I ended up not hiking much with) had already left because she was doing the approach trail, which I wasn't b/c my Achilles tendons had been injured and were still iffy, so I was starting the next day from the Forest Service road and meeting up with her at the first shelter.

The memories are consuming me.
