[Cdt-l] Mapbook updates posted online.

Jerry,

Oh, what a great reminder of always keeping one eye open and perhaps one half of your brain open to changes.

I can also remember a few years ago that a signed (and survey flagged) section of new trail was being built. Problem was that the trail had NOT been completely built yet. Several hikers had hiked along on brand new shiny tread to only come to an abrupt end of the trail. Lucky for me a note had been left at the junction from a previous "less lucky" hiker.

I have also updated (for you GPS geeks and you know who you are!!) the posted track files of my "rough hand drawn" official route and the major alternates (based on the J. Ley and Wolf alternates). Yep, you should delete the old Beta2 file for Montana and cut and paste in the Beta3. I also made a very small edit to the Anaconda track that is in the Beta3 file…….and remember that errors do and will occur.

BETA3 MT Tracks.gpx NEW 3/15/2012 THIRD draft track files of the combined Montana CDTA alignment and major alternates

Hike softly and carry a big brain…..

NOTE on the NEW Etrex20/30. Jerry asked me a question about loading waypoints using his "swapping the SD card" method he has posted on his web site. I could NOT transfer the waypoints to my Etrex20 internal memory. This is why I like to load lots of points as POI files. There is a work around: you would have to load maps, waypoints and tracks onto separate sd cards for each section or group of waypoints. The Etrex20 can hold up to 2,000 waypoints at a time. You do the math. If anyone else can figure it out, let me know.

There is a confusing area in Montana Segment 5 where duplicate routes exist
because of a failure to remove signage from old alignments after changes.
I became aware of one such place yesterday and have posted the first
correction. Also some notes that might make this easier when you get
there. This was brought to my attention by the USFS after they were
contacted by Jim Wolf who thought something looked amiss. Thank you Greg
and Jim.

something has changed. It is my intention to visit rerouted areas and
gather new data each year so a heads-up from hikers would be appreciated.
Just let me know the state, segment, and mileages where the reroutes occur
and I will try to go there and update it. Even with the demise of CDTA,
there will be considerable work done on the trail this year by other
entities, so you may find changes.

called Map Updates. If you are thru-hiking this year you should take a
look at it before you take off.
