Hi Michelle,
At the risk of bombarding you with even more advice on this timeless topic,
let me suggest a couple more considerations.

1- You owe it to yourself to try a zero-drop shoe, like the Altra Lone
Peaks or Hokas. They are not for everyone, but for me and many others, they
have been a true revelation in hiking comfort. I would guess that maybe
half the NoBo hikers I saw on the CDT last year were wearing the Altras.

2 - "Waterproof" shoes and boots are nothing of the sort, unless they are
heavy mountaineering boots. If it rains more than a couple of hours (and it
will in CO), your feet will get wet. And they will take forever to dry out
again in those waterproof shoes. On warm days, your feet will be hot and
sweaty because those shoes are not very breathable. Light mesh shoes get
wet but dry out quickly. Bring an extra pair of socks, rotate them
frequently, and your feet will be much happier.

3- try a lot of shoes and don't settle for anything that is not super comfy
right from the start. Don't listen to salespersons who say they need to get
broken in or that you'll get used to them. That's bunk. If your feet are
hurting, hiking sucks. Don't take a chance on anything that doesn't feel
right.

Ok, hiking with sore feet is still better than working, but hiking with
happy feet is the best.
