We are using 6 oz water bottles for drink mixes and olive oil. They seem to be better about closing tightly and more securely.
For powdered milk we use a different tact. We only use it in meals (like Mac & Cheese). So we package a one meal ration of powdered milk in a small Ziploc bag that I purchased from a medical supply house. The packet of milk goes inside a quart Ziploc when we repackage the Mac & Cheese. The small Ziploc is mostly a one-use item, but quite lightweight. We also package parmesan cheese in these small bags for added calories.
By the way we use the technique Tom Reynolds wrote about to stuff bear canisters, but we use Ziplocs. If you open the top slightly and roll the contents up toward the top you can get all the air out.

To all you ziplock bag users on the trail --
I recall having trouble with certain contents such as drink mixes and powdered milk getting into the zip and clogging things up.

Good suggestion for "at home" Tortoise. But when I teach backpacking, I make my students learn my trail mantra, which is: "Life is a ziploc"!!! Or: "My kingdom for a ziploc"!!! (Tongue in cheek).

Here's a tip for use at home, and for heavy-weight backpackers.
I give the plastic bag a quick twist then use a snap clothespin to grip the twisted part and keeps the bag closed. Fast and easy and very little change of tearing the bag when opening.

When you figure out how to do it, send instructions to the rest of us! I can't say I have any significant air trap issues with ziplocs tho. Still, I'm always willing to learn a better way. But one of my crusades in life is to rid the world of twisty ties! That and those dumb square(ish) plastic closures for bread bags. The twisties and the plastic ones get tossed first thing upon opening a new loaf. Instead I just make a loose knot in the wrapper to close it. If I use twisties on the trail, it means I'm going to be p.o.'d at least once every day when I start trying to un-twist the twisties in the wrong direction, then the right one, then the wrong one again......well, you get my point. Could be a real hinderance to the correct mental attitude on a thru........
I'm just sayin'............
