Here are a few ideas based solely on ease of transportation access.

Bus to Tehachapi/Mojave and then hike to Cottonwood Pass and then exit to Lone Pine where you can use bus service to get to Reno or Los Angeles to fly home. Downside is there are some long water carries, but this section would give a good varied environment.

Yosemite to Echo Summit (Lake Tahoe) has easy bus acess (AMTRAK/YARTS) to Tuolumne Meadows and then bus service from Tahoe to Reno. This is beautiful country though not easy hiking.

Burney Falls to Dunsmuir (Amtrak to Redding then bus to Burney. Take Amtrak home). Terrain not very difficult.

Dunsmuir (Castle Crags SP) at the I-5 to Ashland (Amtrak can be accessed in Ashland via a bus). The terrain isn't that hard through here.

You can do most of the Sierra Neveda via the CREST bus along Hwy 395, but the altitude and terrain would be difficult for someone not in excellent shape.
